Edmonia Bell, affectionately called “Ed”, was the first child born to the late Emanuel and Rosalee Bell, on December 6, 1924 in Natchez, Mississippi. She received her formal education in the Natchez, MS School System. Edmonia accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at Pine Mount Church in Natchez.
Upon moving to Chicago, IL with her family, she secured a job at a factory where she worked for many years, which was a testament to her dedication, commitment, and strong work ethics.
While at a social event, Edmonia met Willie Aaron Covington. After a proper courtship period, they were wed on January 29, 1967. To this union a beautiful daughter, Rita Renee, was born. As a loving wife and mother, Edmonia graciously and proudly devoted her life to the care and well being of them and her home.
It was in the Covington home where education, Christian morals and values were instilled; the savoring aroma of sweet potato pies permeated the air while Western shows and movies played on the television; and her love for her family and cats abounded. Shopping for antiques and traveling to New Orleans, with her sister Verga, were two of her favorite passions in life.
Being a dedicated and faithful Christian, who believed in giving service to her church, Edmonia served diligently on the usher board of Blackwell-Isreal Samuel AME Zion Church (Chicago, IL), until her health failed. The gentle soul of Edmonia Covington went home to be at rest with the Lord on Saturday afternoon, July 13,. 2019.
Preceding her in death are her dear husband, Willie Aaron Covington; parents: Emanuel and Rosalee Bell; and sister, Verga Hall.
Edmonia leaves to cherish her memories: a loving daughter and son-in-law, Rita and Merill Chandler; two brothers: Emanuel (Pearl) Bell and C.R. (Charlesetta) Bell; a beloved sister-in-law, Rosie Pittman; four nieces: Elaine (Daniel) Gayles, Tracey Bell, Latoya Bell, and Ruby Pittman; seven nephews: William Pittman, Henry Pittman, David Pittman, Cornell; Bell, Jerome (Veronica) Bell, Ronald (Yonnie) Anderson, and Roderick (Denise) Bell; and a host of other relatives and friends.
