Rev. Martin Luther Watt was born February 13, 1947. He is the ninth child of eleven children born to the late Reacy Hawkins and Cora Bell Matthews Watt in Carroll County, Mississippi. His daughter, Shinita Jones, and his siblings, James Melvin, Mary Louise, Merdean, Ocie DeLouis, William Jennings, and Henry Douglas preceded him in death.
Rev. Watt’s former education was done at Summerfield and North Carrollton, Mississippi Public Schools System.
Rev. Watt was employed at Baldwin Piano Company in Greenwood, Mississippi before moving to Illinois. It was during the summer of 1967; Rev. Watt went to Markham, Illinois for a visit but ended up not returning to Mississippi, which a new chapter started in his life. He worked for many years at the Wisconsin Steel Mill where he met many friends. Many years passed and Rev. Watt decided to move again.
In the early 80’s he returned to his hometown Carroll County, Mississippi. During this time he worked for Carroll County Public Schools System in the Transportation Department and also as a substitute teacher. Several years later his stay in Mississippi finally came to an end and he returned to Illinois. Upon his return he gained employment with the City of Harvey where he remained until his retirement in 2009
Rev. Watt confessed in life to Christ at an early age at Ebenezer Christian Methodist Episcopal Church in Carroll County, Mississippi. Although he moved his membership to True Holiness Church Of God In Christ and later he established The Disciples Church of God In Christ in Harvey, IL, he never forgot his home church. He visited and supported Ebenezer until his death.
Rev. Watt departed his life on Tuesday, February 12, 2019,just hours before his 72nd birthday, at Advocate South Suburban Hospital in Hazelcrest, IL. His farewell message was,
“When you start tomorrow without me, please don’t think we are far apart, but think of me in your hearts, forever.”
Rev. Watt leaves to cherish his memories three daughters: Cynthia Crowder of Lima, OH; Demetria Jones, and Latrice Jones of Harvey, IL; 22 grandchildren; 11 great grand children; three sisters: Lovie Watt Ingram of Palestine, AR, Altha Watt Hobbs of Dallas, TX, and Eunice Watt Dezell of Memphis, TN; one brother: Reacy Henderson (Sallie) Watt of McCarley, MS; four sister in laws, and one brother in law; two special friends, Romana Bethel and Linda Daniel; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
