Helena D Greenfield

Helena Delois Greenfield was born on February 5, 1956, in Jackson, Mississippi to Norman and Deloise Greenfield. She was the only child from that union. Helena attended Christ the King Catholic grade school before heading north to Illinois. As she grew up, Helena often shared fond memories of her childhood as she watched her mother care so dearly for her uncles with her sister Frankie while struggling with her own health challenges.

Helena completed her bachelor's degree in social work in 1980 from Loyola University, Chicago and pursued her goals to graduate with a MSW (Master of Social Work) from Aurora University and became a licensed social worker in 1988. In 2005, she returned to the classroom and received a second Bachelor of Science degree in Theology. Helena loved helping others to live their best life and found the need to serve in nursing homes advocating for the elderly community.

Helena chose her final professional home at School District 170 for over 20 years working with grade school children. As a lead social worker and a key member of the district crisis team, Helena was instrumental in coordinating and providing support to staff, faculty and students. She trained both seasoned and new social workers and counselors on protocols and interventions in crisis. Helena continued her passion for education over the years and continued attending seminars and gaining professional certifications through 2023-

To her family, Helena was affectionately known as "Lene or Lena" and held her place in the family as one who created calm in chaos, and encouragement during tough times while loving each member so completely. Helena was a true lover of nature and craved even a grip of one of nature's creations or feeling a tug while holding her favorite fishing rod. Helena was a woman that approached life with hope and determination and always led with a can-do attitude. She placed God first and recognized the significance of each day and began with gratitude.
